The Origin and Development History of the American Shorthair

There are two theories about the origin of the American Shorthair: some believe that the cat is a native American cat that was selectively bred over a long period of time; others believe that it was brought from Europe to America in the 17th century and then improved.

In the autumn of 1620, a small fishing boat (the Mayflower) left an English port, heading towards America across the ocean. In fact, when they left port, many veteran sailors doubted whether the 27-meter-long wooden sailboat would make it to the other side. There were 102 people on board, some necessities, and a dozen cats. Finally, after more than three months of arduous struggle at sea, they arrived at a quiet harbor teeming with fish and shrimp, and a small hill not far from the shore, with a babbling brook. All of this seemed to be arranged by God, and the people on the Mayflower repeatedly made the sign of the cross, thanking God for his blessings. On the fourth Thursday of November 1621, they held a grand celebration to celebrate their harvest and to express their gratitude to God and those who had helped them.

Later, this celebration became a regular event, held annually as Thanksgiving. From then on, the people on the Mayflower began to settle and thrive on this land, starting a new life, which eventually led to the founding of the United States. The cats on the ship, originally used for catching mice and protecting the ship's food, settled in North America after arriving in the New World with the Mayflower. They witnessed the development of the United States and can be considered one of its founding fathers. Ultimately, through years of continuous breeding, the North American Shorthair breed was established.

In the early 20th century, the introduction of foreign cat breeds to the United States began to weaken the native bloodline of the American Shorthair. Kittens resulting from crossbreeding with long-haired cats and Siamese cats exhibited a variety of coat lengths, body shapes, colors, and temperaments. Those who cherished the native American Shorthair had to selectively breed to preserve its distinctive characteristics. Early breeders successfully obtained perfect markings and colors, while retaining its robust physique, beautiful face, and endearing personality.

The American Cat Association (CFA) selected this adorable breed as one of its first five recognized breeds. Initially known as the Shorthaired Domestic Cat, it was renamed the American Shorthair in 1996 to more effectively represent this All American Cat, signifying its North American origin and distinction from the common shorthaired cats seen on the streets. This new name also ended confusion between the American Shorthair and other shorthaired breeds. Throughout the 20th century, the American Shorthair consistently performed well in cat shows, winning numerous awards, including two CFA Cat of the Year awards and one CFA Kitten of the Year award.
