What are some ways to get your cat to drink more water?

With the hot weather, many cat owners ask us, "My cat doesn't seem to drink much water," "It's so hot, and my cat is only drinking so little water; will it get heatstroke?" and "What are some ways to get my cat to drink more water?" Don't worry, today we've compiled 10 ways to get your cat to drink more water for all you cat lovers to refer to.

Methods to increase your cat's water intake

1. Change the water frequently

Cats love to drink clean water and are very sensitive to odors. If owners change the water frequently, washing the water bowl thoroughly each time and adding clean, boiled water (giving cats boiled water reduces the amount of bacteria and microorganisms they ingest, making them healthier! Also, some cats don't like the taste of chlorine), they will be more willing to drink water!

2. Use a container your cat likes.

Some cats like to drink from human mugs, so their owners bought them cat-specific mugs. Other cats often like to steal water from washbasins, so their owners bought them small washbasins as their own. Just changing the container is a small gesture, but it really does make the cats drink more water!

3. Place it in an area where the cat frequently passes by.

Don't just put water in one place at home! Cats are forgetful and capricious animals, and they can't distinguish what's their personal water bowl. When they're thirsty, they might not run all the way to their water bowl, but instead drink from the owner's cup, the wet water on the bathroom floor, or even forget about drinking water later! So, you should always put a water bowl next to their dry food, and try to put several water bowls in the places where your cat likes to stay and rest.

4. Install running water and drinking fountains.

Since wild animals drink flowing water from rivers, many cats also like to drink clean, flowing water. Therefore, there are many products on the market designed to meet this need, such as giant egg water fountains and waterfall water fountains! There are also many DIY aquarium motor water fountains that cat owners make, which are said to be cheap and effective.

5. Give your cat warm water.

My cat loves this trick. When I have time, in winter I pour a glass of warm water and give it to him. If he doesn't drink it, I dip my finger in the water and put it under his nose or let him drink it. Then the cat will start drinking because he sees that it's warm water. (Note: Because cats' tongues are sensitive to heat, the warm water I'm referring to is water close to the cat's body temperature, not hot water!) In summer, I pour a glass of slightly cool (not too cold) water for the cat to drink.

6. Use cat grass tea bags

This trick was suggested by a merchant selling cat grass tea bags at a pet expo; use it as a reference.

7. Add water to the can and soak the biscuits in the water until softened.

I highly recommend adding water to the canned food! Unless your cat absolutely hates canned food or is so fed up with it that they're ready to vomit, what cat wouldn't want to drink all the water mixed in with the food and then quickly take a big bite of the meat? Many cats fall for this trick! And it can get your cat to drink at least 10cc of water at once, not even including the water from the canned food itself! As for softening the biscuits with water, this works better for kittens. My experience is that adult cats don't like soft biscuits, while kittens love soft food.

8. Give your cat plenty of food with high water content.

While canned cat food isn't good for a cat's teeth, it's not particularly harmful either (canned cat food simply lacks the teeth-grinding effect of cat biscuits and isn't as effective at preventing tartar buildup, but it's not the main cause of tartar!). Therefore, if your budget, feeding time, and your cat's health permit, it's recommended to occasionally give them soft, wet food. This not only replenishes their fluids but also satisfies their craving for meat. Feeding your cat boiled chicken breast or small fish is also excellent, as these meats contain a significant amount of moisture (but it's still important to maintain a balanced diet; dry food is more nutritionally complete and should still be a staple in their diet)!

9. Spark the cat's curiosity

Because it's a bit troublesome, this trick is only for reference! It's like tricking a child into eating a carrot; I sometimes try to get my cats to drink water while I'm playing with them. For example, I might touch a cat with a wet finger, and the cat will dry it for me! Or I might put a little water in a strange container, and the cat will curiously sniff it, and when it finds water, it will involuntarily take a few sips. I've also tried leaving a dripping faucet in front of the cat, and they'll curiously try to fill it with water. It's all random, but the process is quite fun.

10. Watering

This is a last resort! The method is to take a common syringe without a needle—the kind that veterinarians use to prescribe medicine for cats when they have a cold, flu, or are injured. Clean it, treat the water as medicine, and hold your cat while you pour it down between its teeth! The cat will initially resist fiercely, but once the water gets in, it will definitely stick out its tongue to drink, preventing itself from choking. Although this might make the cat resentful, its life is more important! Even better, it makes it easy for the owner to estimate how much water the cat has drunk in a day—a foolproof method!
