Many cat owners believe that cats only go into heat in spring and autumn, but this is not the case. Cats can also go into heat in winter. Female cats are seasonally polyestrous animals, with each heat cycle lasting about 3-7 days. During the heat cycle, they will go into heat about once every two weeks, mostly concentrated from spring to autumn. This is mainly because the degree of sunlight a female cat goes into heat is related to the amount of sunlight. Female cats are more likely to go into heat in seasons with longer hours of sunshine.
However, domesticated cats are often exposed to lights at night, so they can still go into heat during the winter, which is not the breeding season. As for male cats, they generally do not have an estrus cycle; they are mainly stimulated by the pheromones secreted by female cats when they are in heat.
What to do if your cat goes into heat in winter?
1. If you do not want to breed your cat, you can wait until the cat's heat cycle ends and then take it to the vet for spaying/neutering.
2. Petting a cat can help relieve anxiety.
3. Isolate it from male cats.
4. Give your cat some of its favorite toys and treats to attract its attention. You can also play some upbeat music softly to distract it.
