A cat weighing over 6 kilograms is considered obese. However, different breeds of cats have different criteria, so weight alone cannot determine a cat's obesity. Cat owners can assess obesity by feeling their cat's ribs. If it takes considerable effort to feel the ribs, the cat is likely obese. If a cat is obese, weight loss measures are necessary to prevent illness.
The disadvantages of cats being overweight:
Being overweight in cats can increase the burden on their cardiovascular system, making them more susceptible to diseases such as congestive heart failure. In addition, if a cat is too fat, its weight will be excessive, which will increase the burden on its leg joints and make it more prone to arthritis. Overweight cats are also more likely to develop hyperlipidemia and fatty liver disease. They also have a higher incidence of diseases such as diabetes.
