The awkward phase in cats refers to a period during normal growth when cats only grow bones and not flesh, making them appear disproportionate. Some may even have a pointed face and thinning fur. They lose the proportions, harmony, and beauty that a breed should have, hence the name "awkward phase."

How long does a cat's awkward phase last?
The awkward phase typically occurs between 3 and 6-7 months of age in kittens, with some exceptions lasting up to a year. Some kittens don't experience an awkward phase at all. The reason for this awkward phase is a normal growth characteristic. As kittens grow rapidly, the uneven growth rates of their various tissues and structures lead to a disproportionate overall body shape, balance, and aesthetics. For example, a British Shorthair with a round face may develop a pointed face during the awkward phase; during molting, the markings on its fur may fade. During this period, the kitten may appear thinner and less proportionate.
