Why a kitten's eyes are watering:
1. Dietary issues
If cats eat too much "heaty" food or overly salty cat food, they are prone to getting "heatiness" (a concept in Traditional Chinese Medicine), which can cause their eyes to become red and watery.
2. Inadequate eye cleaning
A cat's eyes need to be cleaned daily, as cats naturally produce a small amount of eye discharge each day. If this discharge isn't cleaned promptly, it can accumulate and breed bacteria, leading to eye discomfort and tearing.
3. Ingrown eyelashes
Cats have a relatively crowded facial structure, making their eyes prone to tearing due to irritation from long fur.
4. Infection with pathogens
Tearing in cats can be caused by illnesses such as colds, blepharitis, or conjunctivitis. Cats' eyes are quite delicate and easily infected with bacteria, viruses, or parasites, leading to red, swollen eyes and increased discharge.
Solutions for a kitten's tearing eyes:
1. Adjust your cat's diet. Avoid feeding them too much food that is likely to cause internal heat. Focus on a light diet with meat as a supplement. You can add some pet stain remover to their food to help reduce tearing. When you have time, make some light soups or porridge to soothe their tearing.
2. Wipe away any buildup of dirt from your cat's eyes daily with a clean, damp towel, then apply eye drops to keep the eyes clean and moist, and maintain eye health.
3. Regularly trim any excessively long fur around your cat's eyes, or take them to a pet grooming salon. Daily eye massages can help relax your cat and reduce tearing. If your cat has congenital ingrown eyelashes, which can irritate the eyes, surgical removal is recommended.
4. Regularly observe your cat's health, especially for eye inflammation, and treat it promptly.
