What are some reasons why cats scratch?
I. Defend our homeland
1. Cats consider their home their territory, and scratching is one way they mark their boundaries. If a cat frequently scratches near the door, it may be because they are wary of potential "intruders" who might enter the home through there.
2. Cats reinforce their scent by scratching because they have scent glands on their front paws. Scratching allows their scent to remain on their paws, increasing territorial recognition.
II. Physiological Needs
Cats scratch to promote the shedding of old nails and the growth of new nails, which is a natural way for them to keep their claws healthy.
III. Domain Identification
Cats have sweat glands between their nails that emit a unique scent. As territorial animals, they leave this scent on their territory by sharpening their claws, thus marking and maintaining their domain.
