How do you brush a cat's teeth?

Some first-time cat owners ask me if they need to brush their cats' teeth. If so, how often should they brush their cats' teeth? With rising living standards, more and more families are keeping pet cats; however, not many owners truly practice scientific and healthy cat care.

Simply put, you need to brush your cat's teeth regularly to protect their oral health, just like humans brush their teeth morning and night. Oral health is also very important for cats. Oral diseases not only affect a cat's normal appetite but also cause significant harm to its body and can directly impact its lifespan.

How to brush a cat's teeth

Under normal circumstances, it's best to brush your cat's teeth about three times a week. Of course, the actual frequency should be determined based on your cat's diet and oral health. For example, if you frequently feed your cat soft, sticky food, you should brush their teeth more often. If they are primarily fed kibble and you maintain good oral hygiene by giving them chew toys or chew sticks, then you can reduce the frequency of brushing.

To raise a healthy pet cat, you need to brush its teeth weekly and pay attention to protecting its oral health. Owners should start training their kittens to brush their teeth from a young age. Additionally, if financially feasible, owners should take their cats to the vet annually to remove tartar and plaque and maintain healthy teeth.

Before brushing your cat's teeth, prepare the necessary tools, such as a cat toothbrush and toothpaste. When training your cat to brush its teeth for the first time, you can use a soft cotton gauze dipped in a suitable amount of saline solution.

When brushing your cat's teeth, wrap a gauze around your index finger and gently rub it back and forth to clean the gums. When using a toothbrush, remove a small amount of plaque first, then slowly clean the cat's teeth. During brushing, keep the toothbrush at approximately a 45-degree angle; this will improve the cleaning effect.
