If you cultivate a garden and water and fertilize it every day, you certainly don't want your cat to come in and play. Once a cat gets in, it will make a ruckus and often turn the whole yard into a mess, trampling your plants and making all your hard work go to waste. However, it's too late to fix things once the cat has already gotten in. So we've come up with some ways to prevent cats from getting in.
Another major benefit of keeping cats out of the garden is reducing the likelihood of food poisoning. We know that many plants are poisonous to cats, some even highly toxic. Eating many flowers and plants can cause cats to vomit, have seizures, suffer liver failure, or even die. However, these lone hunters of flowers seem unwilling to learn their lesson, and even after repeated vomiting, many cats will repeatedly eat the flowers that make them sick. Therefore, keeping cats away from the garden is also for their health and longevity. 
Method 1: Build a fence
1. Use plastic forks or chopsticks to build an obstacle to prevent the cat from climbing over.
Secure forks or chopsticks between each plant, ensuring they are upside down in the soil. Cats generally avoid large obstacles easily, so smaller obstacles, especially those with small spikes, will be more effective. The tips of the forks or chopsticks won't seriously injure a cat, but they will be enough to scare them away. The distance between two chopsticks or forks should be less than 20cm; if they are too far apart, they will be ineffective. You can also use 25cm plant-shaped spikes instead of forks or chopsticks.
2. Insert thin iron wires into the soil.
The thin wire should be secured before the plant sprouts. Plants can usually grow in crevices, but cats will feel uncomfortable if they step on the thin wire. If the plant needs extra space to grow, you can use wire cutters to cut some of the thin wire to give the plant enough room to grow.
3. Install a grid-like fence.
Set up a lattice fence before sowing. The fence will effectively keep out stray cats in the area. Gently press the fence into the soil, partially burying it. Plant the plants in the soil around the fence. As the plants grow, they will grow around the fence.
4. Scatter some pine cones, twigs and pebbles on the ground.
Sprinkling these things around your plants will make it uncomfortable for cats to walk on. The cats will feel uncomfortable walking on them, and they won't easily dig these things away. If cats can't clear these obstacles, they won't trample the soil anymore.
5. Lay a special mat on the soil.
These mats have soft plastic pegs on the surface. They are usually sold in four pieces, making them easier to place on soil of different sizes. Different brands offer different sizes, but a typical package contains two to five mats. Don't simply lay the mat on the soil. Press the mat into the soil and cover it with soil, leaving only the plastic pegs exposed. Otherwise, a clever cat will scratch the mat away.
Method 2: Scare the cat away
1. Use a water sprayer to scare away the cat.
Many cats are afraid of water, so spraying water on a cat visiting your garden for the first time can effectively scare them away. All you need to do is quickly spray water at the cat. The goal is to startle the cat, not to soak it. So don't use too much water pressure to frighten it. For some cats, this method won't work because they aren't afraid of water and may even enjoy it.
2. Install a flexible sprinkler system.
These sprinklers can detect unwanted visitors like cats and quickly spray water to scare them away. Each sprinkler is equipped with an infrared device during installation. When a cat enters, the sprinkler sprays water directly at it. The spray only lasts for a few seconds, designed to scare the cat away rather than wet it. These sprinklers are ineffective in winter when the water freezes, and they also do not work effectively when the cat is not in the controlled area.
3. Buy an ultrasonic device
The ultrasonic device effectively emits ultrasonic waves that are inaudible to humans but audible and frightening to cats. Once installed, the device automatically detects any movement. When it detects an intruding animal, it sounds an alarm that scares away the cat. This device is effective within an area of 85 square meters.
4. Use an air cannon
Like a sprinkler, an air cannon uses a detector to spot intruding cats and then fires a stream of air to scare them away. Air cannons, like sprinklers, are virtually silent. Once installed, the device detects animals entering the controlled area and fires a stream of air. This airflow won't harm small animals, but it will scare them away.
Finally, what plants are poisonous to cats? Generally speaking, common plants such as azaleas, spider lilies, periwinkles, hydrangeas, oleanders, daffodils, delphiniums, hyacinths, evergreen plants, golden pothos, lantana, poinsettias, amaryllis, morning glories, cyclamen, bellflowers, caladiums, dieffenbachia, desert roses, irises, crotons, taro, poppies, lupins, etc., are not suitable for cats to eat. Owners should try to prevent their cats from coming into contact with them during daily care.
