Cats are generally clean animals and have a habit of burying their feces. Therefore, cat litter and litter boxes are essential when raising a cat. However, sometimes cats refuse to use the litter box, usually because the litter is smelly and unclean. So, what should owners do to avoid this problem and create a better living environment for themselves?
Choosing the right cat litter is important. Many cat litters are scented to mask the smell of feces, assuming cats will like it. However, cats already dislike that scent, and when mixed with the smell of feces, the odor becomes overwhelming and unpleasant, making it even more unbearable for them. Therefore, choose carefully. Besides scented cat litters, pine wood litters have a disinfectant-like smell that many cats dislike. So, keep this in mind when choosing pine wood litter.
Secondly, as the owner, you must be diligent. Always keep the litter box dry. Clean up cat feces and urine promptly; the smell of litter lingering in the litter box is unbearable for cats. Therefore, as the owner, you must clean the litter box frequently, ideally twice a day. Remove cat feces and clumps of litter, then replace with fresh litter. Replace the litter completely every so often. Besides frequent litter changes, the litter box also needs to be cleaned, generally every two weeks. When cleaning, pay attention to the smell of the cleaning agent; avoid using one with a strong odor. When adding fresh litter, be careful not to add too much; a layer of 5-8 centimeters is sufficient. This thickness makes cleaning easier and also makes it easier for the cat to use the litter box.
Third, it's best to have more litter boxes than you have cats. Generally, one more litter box than you have cats is ideal. Also, make sure the area where they are placed is well-ventilated and clean, and don't store them with cat food.
