How to express anal glands in a cat
Catch the cat, ideally with two people holding it down. Wear gloves, cover the cat's genitals with a tissue, and use your right thumb and forefinger to pinch the cat's glands and squeeze upwards and outwards. Be careful not to use too much force. If there is fluid in the cat's glands, it will spurt out after squeezing. Squeeze several times until there is no more fluid.
Normally, cats don't need their glands expressed. Cats naturally express their glands during defecation, causing the fluid to drain. They also lick themselves and clean themselves, so gland excretion problems are rare, and special cleaning is usually unnecessary. However, if a cat wears an Elizabethan collar for an extended period or is lethargic, the owner should closely observe the condition of the cat's glands. If the glands have a strong odor, or there is foul-smelling fluid around the anus, or if there is redness and swelling, the owner should express the cat's glands.
The glands are mainly located around the anus at the four o'clock and eight o'clock positions. You can use your thumb and forefinger to press on the corresponding areas, pushing the glands outwards from the inside. Then, gently clean the surrounding fur. If you are unable to do this yourself, you can take your cat to a veterinary clinic or pet store for assistance.
