What are the dangers of letting cats roam freely?

Many families keep cats in enclosures, which not only prevents them from getting lost but also greatly improves their health. A few families still allow their cats to roam freely, but the pet cat website editor advises against this. Below are some of the major dangers of letting cats roam freely.

What are the dangers of letting cats roam freely?

1. Getting lost. Nowadays, the buildings in residential areas are all built in a similar way, especially the fully furnished apartments, and even the security doors look the same. With more and more high-rise buildings, cats can easily get lost if they are allowed to roam freely.

2. Prone to illness. Cats that roam outdoors are more likely to bring back parasites. Contact with stray cats in the neighborhood can easily lead to infection with serious infectious diseases such as feline panleukopenia, feline AIDS, and feline peritonitis during peak infectious disease seasons. Furthermore, free-roaming cats inevitably catch small animals such as mice and birds, which can also bring back germs.

3. Increase the number of stray cats. Families that let their cats roam freely generally lack awareness of proper cat care and do not spay or neuter their cats. As a result, these cats will inevitably mate with stray cats during their heat cycle. If the kittens are not adopted, they will also become stray cats, gradually causing the number of stray cats to increase exponentially.

4. Car accidents. There are many vehicles outside now, especially at night, and drivers drive relatively fast. Cats can easily be blinded by car headlights and not be able to dodge in time, resulting in being hit by a car. At best, they will suffer fractures, but most cats will be crushed and their flesh will be torn to pieces.

5. Being captured. Although cat theft is relatively less common compared to dog theft, cat trafficking is becoming increasingly rampant, especially in recent years with the booming cat meat market. A group of cat traffickers specialize in capturing stray cats and stealing free-roaming cats in residential areas. Once they catch a cat, they sell it to roadside vendors selling lamb skewers, passing off cat meat as lamb to consumers; or they sell the cat to places like Guangdong where cat meat is consumed.

Therefore, I do not recommend letting cats roam freely, as this is a very irresponsible practice for cats.
