1. Feeding method
It's important to establish a routine of feeding your American Shorthair cat at a fixed time and place. Also, be aware that younger cats need more frequent and larger meals, typically at least four times a day.
Adult cats only need to be fed twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening.
2. Feeding amount
The amount of food should be determined based on the American Shorthair cat's age, size, activity level, and temperament. You can refer to the instructions on the food packaging or consult a veterinarian.
To increase the variety of your pet's diet and protect their dental health, you can try feeding them canned food and dry food in combination or alternately.
3. Food intake control
About 90 percent of cats know how to regulate their food intake to maintain a balanced and slim figure, but you shouldn't let them eat whatever they want.
Obese American Shorthair cats are indeed more prone to health problems. If you want your cat to have a healthy body and ideal weight, in addition to controlling the amount of food, you also need to provide some toys for it to play with and exercise.
Kittens have weak digestive systems, making human food both tempting and dangerous for them. Animal liver, poultry bones, chocolate, onions, and scallions are particularly dangerous for kittens.
4. Drinking water needs
In fact, water is just as important to American Shorthair cats as it is to humans. It is not only an essential element of their diet but also a basic nutrient that is easily overlooked by most owners.
Although cat food contains water, you should still always keep clean drinking water in your cat's water bowl, especially in hot weather. This will prevent it from drinking water from the toilet or searching for water in the kitchen or bathroom.
