The Exotic Shorthair (Garfield) is a breed created in the United States in the 1960s through artificial breeding, crossbreeding long-haired breeds such as Persians with American Shorthairs and Burmese cats. At the time of the initial breeding program, Exotic Shorthairs were quite thin, and Persian breeders worried that purebred Persians would become hybridized. Some breeders even strongly criticized it as "damaging to purebred cats," and therefore, crossbreeding was banned in 1968.

Of course, some people secretly worked on it and eventually discovered that breeding American Shorthair cats gradually resulted in the desired physique. It wasn't until the 1980s that the Exotic Shorthair breed was officially established and recognized by cat associations.

Imported cat breeds, due to repeated breeding by many people, have a wide variety of coat colors, almost every color imaginable in cats. In appearance, they largely inherit the comical features of the Persian cat. Except for their short fur, their body shape, limbs, head, face, and eyes are identical to the Persian cat.
