Kittens typically begin weaning around 40 to 60 days after birth. This means that kittens can be weaned as early as 40 days old and as late as 60 days old, depending on the mother cat's milk supply.

Some mother cats have an abundant milk supply, which may lead to kittens continuously nursing without weaning. This is normal, as long as the mother cat has enough milk. However, for some mother cats with consistently abundant milk, weaning is necessary. This can be done by using medication to suppress the mother cat's milk production at 60 days of age, forcing the kittens to wean. After weaning, kittens cannot control their appetite, so owners need to feed them regularly and in measured amounts, about 3-4 times a day, only feeding them until they are about 80% full, until the kittens can eat independently.
