Kittens as young as 20 days old are usually unable to feed themselves. At this age, their primary source of nutrition should be their mother's milk or artificial feeding. Their digestive and immune systems are not yet fully developed, so they cannot process solid food.

Kittens typically begin trying solid foods around 4 weeks of age, but they are not fully weaned and can start eating independently until 6-8 weeks of age. During this transition period, kittens may show curiosity about solid foods and try to eat some simple foods, such as cat food.
