Cats' meows have a variety of meanings. Short "meows" are usually a greeting or a way to get attention; continuous and loud "meows" indicate that they have a need, such as being hungry, thirsty, or wanting to play; high-pitched "meows" may indicate that they are surprised or scared; and low and gentle "purrs" indicate that they are content and comfortable.

When a cat hisses sharply, it may be expressing anger or warning; while purring indicates that it is relaxed and happy. A cat's vocalizations are one of its ways of communicating with the world, and each vocalization carries a specific intention.
