Kneading behavior in cats has many meanings. Generally, it's an instinctive reaction in kittens to stimulate their mother's breasts, increasing milk production. As they grow, this behavior gradually transforms into a form of play or enjoyment. Adult cats knead when they feel relaxed and comfortable, indicating pleasure and security. If a cat grows up with someone other than its mother, it may exhibit kneading behavior out of longing for its mother.

Cats also use kneading to stimulate scent glands in their front paws, leaving scent marks that bring them satisfaction and comfort. Kneading also marks a cat's territory or space. Cats in heat may exhibit kneading as a way of expressing their desire to mate.
