"What do cats really like to eat?" has always been a problem that troubles owners. Giving them only dry food looks too pitiful, while homemade cat food raises concerns about getting the seasoning right. So when many owners see that their cats like canned food, they simply switch their cats' main diet to canned food. However, although cats love canned food, eating it long-term may not be a good thing for them.
I. Benefits of Cat Food Cans
First, compared to dry food, canned cat food is more palatable, so cats love it. Second, canned cat food is easier to eat, which aligns perfectly with a cat's "save as much as possible" lifestyle. Third, canned cat food has a high water content. Cats are actually not very fond of drinking water, as can be seen from the daily reduction in water in their water bowls; therefore, feeding them canned cat food is a great help to their owners.
II. Shortcomings of Cat Food Cans
First, there's the issue of nutrition. Many canned cat foods don't fully meet a cat's nutritional needs, so if you consistently feed your cat canned food, they are likely to develop various nutritional deficiencies later in life. Second, canned cat food is a soft food. While convenient and easy for cats to eat, it offers no benefit to their teeth. Because their teeth don't receive the friction of dry food, they are more prone to tartar buildup and other dental problems. Third, due to its high water content, cats get hungry quickly after eating canned food. Fourth, excessive consumption of canned cat food can lead to picky eating habits, which are very difficult to change once formed.
III. Regarding canned staple foods
Canned food may seem to completely replace dry food as a cat's main diet, but as mentioned earlier, canned food is a soft food and long-term consumption is not good for dental health.
