Cats typically sleep between 14 and 20 hours a day, but not all of that time is spent in deep sleep. A cat's sleep consists of two stages: light sleep and deep sleep. Deep sleep is relatively short, lasting only about 4 to 5 hours.

Kittens need to sleep longer due to their physical development, and may sleep 16 to 20 hours a day. Adult cats also sleep for a long time, but they are relatively more active and may sleep between 12 and 16 hours a day.
