Cats can die from eating chocolate. The main toxic components in chocolate for cats and dogs are theobromine and caffeine. Both of these components belong to methylxanthine. Cats and dogs absorb and metabolize them slowly, and they stay in the bloodstream for a long time, easily accumulating to dangerous levels and causing poisoning symptoms.

While it's not always fatal for cats to accidentally ingest chocolate, it can still be fatal if not detected in time or if a large amount is consumed. For safety's sake, pet owners should keep all chocolate out of the house to prevent their cats and dogs from accidentally eating it.
