Whether a pure white cat has a genetic defect depends on the individual. The coat color of a pure white cat is controlled by the white gene, which may interact with other genes to lead to certain physiological or behavioral characteristics.

Some pure white cats may carry genes associated with inner ear degeneration, which can lead to hearing problems or inner ear diseases. Pure white British Shorthairs, in particular, have been reported to be more prone to auricula syndrome, a genetic condition characterized by inconspicuous, incomplete, or only external ear remnants, along with hearing impairment. However, this does not mean that all pure white cats have this genetic defect.
