Vaccinations should begin around two months of age. Generally, kittens can receive the feline triple vaccine around two months of age, and the rabies vaccine around three months. This is because by around two months of age, the maternal antibodies in kittens have largely disappeared, making this the optimal time to administer the triple vaccine, as this prevents maternal antibodies from neutralizing the vaccine. The feline triple vaccine protects against feline panleukopenia virus, feline herpes simplex virus, and feline calicivirus. The initial immunization requires three doses, each approximately four weeks apart. A booster immunization is then given annually thereafter.
After a cat receives a vaccination, please note the following: First, after vaccination, cats may experience allergic reactions such as swelling of the head, face, and small red rashes. Therefore, after the vaccination, owners should observe their cats for half an hour before leaving. Second, because the virus is a weakened live vaccine, cats may experience symptoms such as lethargy, decreased appetite, and reduced energy after vaccination.
