Most flea collars on the market are soaked in organophosphate insecticides, and you can smell a strong chemical odor as soon as you open the packaging, which is harmful to cats. However, some flea collars use newer pyrethroid insecticides, which have a relatively lower odor and toxicity. Therefore, after opening the flea collar packaging, you should let it sit in a well-ventilated place for a day or two. Finally, you should pay close attention to your cat's condition for the first week after it starts wearing the flea collar. If you notice any abnormalities, remove the collar immediately and take your cat to the vet.
Things to note when using a flea collar on a cat:
1. Newly purchased collars should not be put on cats immediately. They should be removed from the packaging and placed in a safe place for 3-5 days before being put on the cat. This is because newly purchased collars have a high concentration of organophosphate pesticides, and putting them on immediately can easily cause skin allergies and poisoning in cats.
2. After the cat wears a collar, the effectiveness of the deworming treatment should be checked frequently. If fleas or lice are found on the cat's buttocks during the check, it means that the collar's efficacy has weakened and it can no longer effectively eliminate external parasites on the cat's body. It must be replaced in time, rather than mechanically replacing it according to the expiration date.
3. After putting a collar on your cat, you should frequently observe and check on its condition. If you notice any abnormal mental state, such as excitement or inhibition, or alternating excitement and inhibition, drooling, loss of appetite or anorexia, diarrhea, muscle tremors, unsteady gait, body swaying, constricted pupils, or decreased vision, it indicates that the cat has suffered organophosphate poisoning. You should immediately remove the collar and thoroughly wash the neck skin with clean water. After a period of time, the cat will gradually recover and usually requires no special treatment.
4. Remove the flea and lice collar when bathing the cat, and put it back on after the bath.
5. Most flea and lice collars for cats contain organophosphate compounds, so they should not be given to children to play with, as this could lead to poisoning. They should also not be given to cats to play with.
