The function of a cat's claws:
1. A cat's paws are its primary sensory nerves. They not only help them assess the distance and activity level of prey, but also help them maintain their balance.
2. A cat's paws can reduce the impact of falling from a height. The cat's ability to appear and disappear silently is also due to the pads of its paws reducing friction. This is an ability that wild cats acquired over a long period of evolution to hunt prey.
3. Cats can sweat through the pads on their paws, especially in summer when they have done strenuous exercise or are stressed. Their paws will secrete sweat, and when they are hot, they will spread their paws and legs to increase the surface area for heat dissipation.
4. A cat's paws are also an important tool for communicating with the outside world. A cat's sweat can leave a scent to indicate where it has been and to establish its territory.
How to trim a cat's claws:
1. First, you need to soothe the cat's emotions and put it in a relaxed state. For example, you can create a comfortable environment by stroking the cat's paws. This will make the cat stretch out its paws and expose its nails, making it easier for the owner to trim them.
2. Gently grasp one of the cat's front paws. If the cat seems uncomfortable and fidgets, you can wrap it tightly in a towel and then gently pull out one paw. Alternatively, ask someone to hold the cat while you trim its nails.
3. A cat's claws are retracted into its paws. To make the claws visible, you can press down on the front of its paw pad with your thumb while tilting the front of the paw downwards.
4. Make sure your cat's paw is still before trimming its nails. Most cat nails contain blood vessels and nerve tissue in the darker part. Be very careful when trimming their nails to avoid cutting into that area.
5. If you accidentally cut your cat's paw, quickly soak the bleeding paw in styptic powder or cornstarch. If the bleeding does not stop after 10 minutes, it is recommended to take your cat to a veterinary hospital.
