Cats have three different blood types: A, B, and AB. In felines, the gene controlling blood type A is dominant, while the gene controlling blood type B is recessive. Blood type AB is an exception; the gene controlling it is independently inherited.

What are the blood types in cats?

Blood type distribution characteristics in cats:

1. Type A blood is very common in cats. It can be said that most cats around us have type A blood. It is said that more than 90% of cats in the United States have type A blood. Among breeds, Siamese cats are 100% type A, Himalayan cats and Maine Coons have type A blood in 90% of their population; while Turkish Angora cats and Turkish Van cats have a 50/50 split between type A and type B.

2. The distribution of type B blood in cats is not so even; it is common in some breeds but relatively rare in others. It is more prevalent in breeds such as Abyssinian, Sphynx, Devon Rex, and Cornish Rex.

3. Blood type AB is rare in all breeds and is only found in breeds where blood type B exists. Therefore, in everyday life, even in cases where a cat needs a blood transfusion, blood type is not a significant factor unless your cat has a very rare blood type.
