How to trim a cat's nails so it won't hurt when it scratches:
1. First, use pet-specific nail clippers, not human ones, as human nail clippers may create burrs at the cut edges.
2. Next, locate the quick (the red spot on a cat's nail). The quick is usually where the colors separate. It is typically pink near the toes and grayish-white further away. The grayish-white area is where you can trim the nail.
3. When trimming nails, make them as short as possible. Don't just trim the sharp tip. Cats' nails grow very quickly, and if you don't trim them short enough, they may become sharp again in a few days.
4. However, when trimming nails, do not trim them too close to the quick. Keep them a little distance away from the quick to prevent the cat from scratching its claws and drawing blood.
5. After trimming the nails, the owner can use a nail file to help the cat's nails smooth out and make them more rounded.
