What does it mean when my cat kneads on me?
Cat owners often notice that cats, especially kittens, love to knead in various places, seemingly enjoying it immensely. To be honest, not only do cats enjoy it, but I also enjoy it when my cat kneads on me—it feels like a free massage, haha. So why do cats always love to knead on their owners? Let veteran cat owner Pineapple Jam tell you!
1. Kitten memories (muscle memory)
Kittens knead their paws from a young age. When kittens are nursing, they will lie on their mother's belly and massage around her nipples with their paws to promote milk production.
This behavior can cause kittens to retain this habit even after weaning, either for comfort or to seek security. I had a stray cat that did this before; every time I fed it, it would knead in place, which was incredibly cute.
2. The adult cat misses its mother.
Many kittens leave their mothers at two or three months old to find their own homes. The kittens will also remember their mother's tenderness, and by kneading, they imagine that they are still in their mother's arms, which brings them a sense of satisfaction, and some may even purr contentedly.
My cat does the same thing, but unfortunately he kneads on my head. I don't know why. Is it really that safe to do things on my head?
3. The cat seems very relaxed, passing the time in a comfortable way.
Cat owners relax by lying in bed or on the sofa and not thinking about anything or doing something they enjoy. Cats do the same when they knead, usually when they feel safe and secure.
I really enjoy watching cats knead. Firstly, I think cats must be very happy living in their own homes to do that, and secondly, watching cats knead makes me feel very relaxed.
Note: Be very careful with your cat's long claws. If necessary, you can trim their claws before letting them knead. Sharp claws may accidentally scratch your owner and can easily damage clothing or curtains.
