Why do cats fight, and how can we stop them?
I. Reasons for male and female cats fighting
Most cats have a strong sense of territory and will fight fiercely to compete for and protect it. Fights among male cats in the wild can also be for mates, so such fights are quite common. For female cats, besides attacking strangers who invade their territory, male cats may also bother them before they are in heat, and the female cat will attack them in return; in this case, the male cat usually does not retaliate. Fights between cats typically occur between cats of similar age and physical condition; adult cats generally do not engage in fierce fights with younger kittens. Territoriality, heat cycles, and competition for attention can all be reasons for fights between cats.
II. What to do when cats fight
Although fighting among domestic cats is relatively rare, it still occurs. Even cats with a close relationship may fight for territory, mates, or their owner's affection. Cat fighting is certainly not a good thing, so how can you stop cats from fighting? Before stopping a fight, the owner can first determine whether the cats are serious or just playing around. If it's just playing around, the owner can stand by and watch. If the cats are genuinely fighting, observe their posture. See if they are making warning noises or if their ears tend to pull back. If so, the owner should intervene immediately.
To ensure your safety, wear anti-scratch and bite gloves if necessary. You can hold the attacking cat by the neck and loudly reprimand it, then remove it from your body. If the cat cannot calm down, it's best to put it down and wait until it calms down before releasing it.
For owners who are afraid to physically harm their kittens, tools such as water or sticks can be used. After separating the kittens, it's best to give them toys to play with to distract them and prevent them from fighting again immediately. Wild cats will stop at nothing to survive, fight for territory, or secure mates. Therefore, when watching wild cats fight, any attempts to break them up require extra caution. Never try to "conquer" them with your bare hands; always use readily available tools.
Cat fighting is caused by a variety of factors and is an indelible part of their nature. To avoid cat fighting, owners should also pay attention to trimming their cats' nails regularly. Otherwise, it will be heartbreaking to see their cats get hurt in the process.
