Scottish Fold cats have an adorable and endearing appearance that has captured the hearts of many cat owners. However, the two unsightly tear stains around their eyes are quite distressing and make the cat look dirty, which greatly affects their appearance. But the tear stains on Scottish Fold cats can be removed.
1. Take good care of your eyes.
Regular eye care for your cat is crucial. If your cat is constantly tearing up or has excessive eye discharge, check for issues like ingrown eyelashes or foreign objects irritating the eyes. First, clean the area around the eyes with saline solution, then apply a few drops of pet tear stain remover to prevent inflammation and reduce excessive tearing, preventing tear stains from worsening. If the cat's eyelashes are ingrown, a veterinary visit is necessary. If there's a foreign object in the eye, remove it first, then use pet tear stain remover to prevent inflammation.
2. Eat a light diet.
Tear stains in cats are closely related to their long-term diet. Unlike short-nosed cats, Scottish Fold cats are not naturally prone to tear stains; they are usually caused by external factors, such as frequently eating greasy or spicy foods. This can cause the cat to become inflamed, which in turn stimulates the eyes to secrete more tears and eye discharge, gradually worsening the tear stains.
In response, owners need to adjust their cat's diet, providing bland food. If making homemade cat food, it should be steamed or boiled without any seasoning. If the main food is commercial cat food, it should be replaced with low-oil, low-salt complete kitten or adult cat food, replacing oily canned cat food with fruits and vegetables. Eating fruits and vegetables in moderation can greatly help reduce tear stains.
If your cat's tear stains are mild, you can gently wipe them away with a warm, damp towel. If the tear stains are a bit dry, you can first apply a pet tear stain remover to soften them, and then wipe them away with a warm towel.
