Long-haired cats have long, but sparse, fur before they grow their full coat.

Long-haired cats, regardless of their weight, generally have a rounder body shape when they are kittens. Not only are the fur on their necks, cheeks, and tails longer, but the fur on their legs is also noticeably longer. They also have long fur between their toes, and their tails appear shorter than those of short-haired cats. Their frames are usually larger. Their fur is fine, abundant, and dense, without a glossy sheen, and sometimes has a silky texture. It feels very light, soft, and plush to the touch, distinctly different from short-haired cats.
