How much sleep a cat needs varies depending on its size, age, health condition, and environment. Generally, adult cats sleep an average of 12-14 hours a day, while kittens, senior cats, and cats on rainy days may sleep closer to 20 hours a day. However, some cats may sleep up to 22 hours.

If a cat is a hunting animal, it will be alert most of the time and therefore awake most of the time. If a cat exhibits abnormal sleep patterns, such as excessive sleepiness or over-excitement, a veterinarian should be consulted for examination and treatment.
