Cats recognize their owners. Usually, cats can identify people by their scent and face, and they can also recognize people by their attitude towards them.
However, cats generally only recognize people they have lived with for a long time. If a person hasn't seen them for a long time, the cat may initially not recognize them or be afraid when they see them again. This is normal, mainly because cats have a short memory span.
