Cats can get pregnant after one year of age. Female cats typically begin their estrus cycle around six to eight months of age, but this indicates sexual maturity, not physical maturity. Since the mother cat is still under one year old, her pelvis is not fully developed, increasing the risk of dystocia (difficult labor), stillbirth, and other complications during childbirth. Even if the delivery is successful, the kittens will likely be in poor health. Therefore, cats should only be bred after reaching basic physical maturity. It is recommended that cats wait until they are one year old before becoming pregnant, as the risks associated with childbirth at this age are lower than for cats under one year old.
Things to note during a pregnant cat's pregnancy
1. Control food intake. Pregnant cats require careful control over their food intake, especially regarding nutrients. Excessive nutrition and large food portions can lead to obesity in the mother cat, thus affecting delivery.
2. Maintain exercise. Pregnant cats are prone to obesity, so regular exercise is essential. Increasing exercise can greatly reduce the risk of miscarriage.
3. Keep the cat's body dry. Pregnant cats should not play in grass or weeds, as this can easily lead to skin diseases such as ringworm and fleas. If the cat licks the medication, it can be harmful to the health of the unborn kittens.
4. Avoid startling the cat. Do not frighten the pregnant cat. If the cat is timid, it needs a quiet and independent space. Avoid contact with strangers as much as possible, and try not to leave the house!
